Abstract

Abstract The influence of the angle ψ between the grain boundary plane and the precipitate habit plane on the morphology of θ′ in aluminium–copper alloys is specified from transmission electron microscopy of low angle tilt boundaries about 〈100〉. The precipitates are rectangular plates in the habit plane: their length, parallel to the tilt axis, and their width decrease markedly when the angle ψ increases. Thermodynamic considerations, taking the precipitate shape into account, explain some of the results of both the present and previous studies. It is concluded that intergranular precipitation kinetics are directly influenced by the angle between the grain boundary plane and the precipitate habit plane.
