Abstract

The transition probabilities of Pr, Sm and Nd ions in sol–gel glasses are increased by addition of Al 3+ as a result of lowering of the site symmetry in which the ion is situated. The addition of Al has even a greater effect on luminescent efficiencies than on absorption strengths. The effect is a result of a decrease of aggregation of the ions in presence of Al circumventing the cross-relaxation process.
