Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the influence of the crushing process of natural aggregates on the results of accelerated alkali reactivity tests. Thus, two crushers, jaw and roll, were used to crush two aggregates, Vitória and Jaboatão, generating four samples (JV, JJab, RV, RJab), and the morphology of the produced particles was analyzed. Moreover, petrographic analysis, accelerated mortar bar test (AMBT), and miniature concrete prism test were conducted. The results indicated differences in expansion for different crushers, particularly in the AMBT, where the expansion of aggregate Vitória was approximately 2.6-fold higher when crushed with jaw crusher compared with roll crusher. We conclude that the type of crusher is an important parameter in the analysis of the results of the reactive potential of an aggregate using the AMBT and may even lead to erroneous classifications.
