Abstract

Inbred Buffalo strain male and female rats 4, 12, 24, and 52 weeks of age were given subcutaneous injections of a 1% solution of trypan blue. The dosage was 50 mg/kg once weekly for 5 weeks. The rats were killed at the end of 28 weeks. Eight-, 12-, and 24-week-old female rats developed chronic thyroiditis more often than did males of the same age or 4- or 52-week-old females. The lesion was present in females 12 weeks of age more often than in females of other ages. Males 4 and 24 weeks old developed a higher incidence of thyroiditis than males of other ages.
