Abstract
1. 1. The effects of bilateral adrenalectomy (ADX) on energy balance, acute thermogenic responses to food and brown adipose tissue (BAT) thermogenic activity (mitochondrial GDP binding) were studied in rats adrenalectomized at 6 weeks of age (ADX-Y) or at 18 weeks of age (ADX-O). 2. 2. At 20 weeks of age, ADX-Y rats were lighter and exhibited higher levels of thermogenesis than intact controls. ADX-O rats also exhibited higher levels of thermogenesis compared with controls. 3. 3. The results suggest that the reduced thermogenesis that accompanies aging in the rat can be prevented by adrenalectomy at an early age, or reversed by adrenalectomy when much older.
