Abstract
In the last few years, the interest in physical education and sports participation in Israel has grown. The winning of the European Basketball Cup by Maccabbee Tel-Aviv, the public debate over whether to participate in the Moscow Olympic Games, etc. has resulted in greater public interest in sports. This atmosphere of growing interest led the physical education authorities in Israel (Hermon 1981) to develop a program in which interested children of high sports ability are able to enrol in sports classes (SC). The SC, at the junior high school levels, are made up of preselected boys and girls. The particular sport event for each class is chosen by taking into consideration the teacher’s interest and ability as well as the available facilities.
