Abstract
The influence of an external dc magnetic field on proximity measurements with an eddy-current gauge was studied with iron, stainless steel, and copper samples. The magnetic flux density was varied from 0 to 1 T and the direction of the external field was either perpendicular or parallel to the probe axis. Measurements show that with an iron sample, a magnetic field perpendicular to the axis has a tremendous influence on the gauge’s response, but practically no influence at all when parallel to the axis.
