Abstract

Deterioration in the surface properties of Ag films and carbon fibers due to the irradiation of energetic atomic oxygen beam has been studied. A nearly monoenergetic atomic oxygen beam at 5eV with a flux of 1014atoms/m2s was obtained by neutralizing of oxygen ion beam. An irradiation of atomic oxygen beam on Ag film caused a remarkable change in the refraction coefficient of Ag fjlm, and the result of the formation of Agio shows good agreement with the exposure studies in the low earth orbit (STS-4). The irradiation of atomic oxygen has led to an abrupt change in the surface free energy and the increase in oxygen concentration at the surface of carbon fibers. The influences of atomic oxygen on the surface properties of graphite and its composites have been found to be very serious.
