Abstract

The aftermath forage of Russian wild ryegrass, Elymus junceus Fisch. was removed each fall from 1963 through 1967 by three methods: grazing by sheep, close clipping with a rotary mower, and spraying with diquat to desiccate the leaves and then burning. The five-year average seed yields were 294, 405, and 336 kg/ha, respectively, compared with 223 kg/ha from the stand where the residue was allowed to accumulate.Continuous close grazing of the aftermath forage of Russian wild ryegrass plants immediately after seed harvest and throughout August, September, and the first half of October over a number of years resulted in unproductive plants from the standpoint of seed yield.
