Abstract

The effects of NaOH concentration, mineral additive and initial temperature on hydrogen generation from aluminum water reaction were investigated using gas chromatography, X-ray diffraction detection and scanning electron microscope on the reaction gas and solid product. The results show that NaOH which provides a basic alkaline culture is involved in the reaction process, and the hydrogen purity is more than 99.99%. Three additives namely calcium oxide (CaO), magnesium oxide (MgO) and sodium chloride(NaCl), prepared with aluminum powder in bags are used to enhance the reaction rate and yield. A maximum conversion of 86.15% with respect to aluminum is achieved after 150 min. The initial temperature affects the reaction induction period and rate, while the final hydrogen conversion rate is not affected by the initial temperature.
