Abstract
Optical absorption and diffuse reflectance spectra of iron III (Td in MgGa 2− x Fe x O 4, x ≤ 0,2; Oh in ZnGa 2− x Fe x O 4, x ≤ 1) in the range 2500-200 nm are presented. Band assignments and optical parameters are in agreement with the results of recent SCF-Xα-SW molecular orbital calculations of (FeO 9− 6) and (FeO 5− 4) coordination polyhedra. Ferrimagnetic couplings intensify pair excitations: the yellow to brown colors of these mixed oxides result from pair excitations and Fe 3+ ligand field transitions.
