Abstract

Wind power plants (WPPs) must fulfil Grid Code specified reactive power requirements at their connection points. Thus all the WPP components' influence on reactive power capability counts. The WPP main transformer On-Load Tap Changer (OLTC) control settings or control scheme can be optimized in critical borderline cases, possibly enabling sufficient reactive power capability just by a mere control setting adjustment. The influence of OLTC control voltage reference parameter values is studied related to WPP reactive power capability, and noted that even a relatively small marginal influence makes a difference under certain circumstances. In addition, a method for determining the optimal OLTC voltage control parameter values is introduced and demonstrated successfully on an example Test Case.
