Inflammatory changes of the hyperplastic prostate.

Abstract

The investigation comprised 233 representative biopsies performed in 267 patients with benign hyperplasia of the prostate gland. Each biopsy consisted of at least two and, most often, four or more specimens from different parts of the gland. The histological study of the biopsies revealed 84 cases without inflammatory changes, 91 with moderate and 47 with severe chronic inflammatory changes. In 25 cases, acute inflammatory changes were found.The different histological pictures of the biopsies with regard to inflammation were related to (a) age, (b) significant bacteriuria at the time of biopsy-taking, (c) recurrent urinary tract infections, (d) inflammatory changes of the bladder mucosa, and (e) indwelling catheter.
