Abstract

The Tulare Lake Basin was capable of sustaining a large number of aboriginal inhabitants. This conclusion is based on a refined reconstruction of the aboriginal environment and a reevaluation of aboriginal subsistence ecology. In addition to demonstrating a larger carrying capacity than heretofore recognized, the paper challenges some long-held assumptions concerning demographic restraints on California Indians and their adaptation to the environment.
