Abstract

In 1959 and 1960 observations were made on the infestation of corn plants by the dusky sap beetle, Carpophilus lugubris Murray, which indicate that effectively timed insecticide treatments for control of the sap beetle probably coincide with the time when sprays for control of the corn earworm, Heliothis zea (Boddie), should be applied. Adult sap beetles congregate in the area of the corn plant that receives most of the spray material when ear-protecting sprays for control of the corn earworm are applied. Sap beetle infestation is increased when other insects injure the corn plant, and the adult beetles are attracted to tile damaged sites.
