Abstract
The effect of edible plant products, viz., Vitellaria paradoxa Graent, f., palm kernel oil (PKO) from Elaeis guineensis Jacq., Zingiber officinale Rosc., Allium sativum L., Zanthoxylum zanthoxyloides (Lam) Waterm, Piper guineense (Thonn) and Capsicum sp. was investigated on the development of Sitophilus zeamais in cowpea Vigna ungiuculata (L.) Walp. grains. Only Z. zanthoxyloides powder at 12.5 g/250 g grains gave complete protection to the grains for up to 60 days. There were no significant differences in the number of adults emerging from the other treatments, though their values were above that of the control, suggesting some stimulating effect of the treatments. The need to continue to exploit edible plant products for the control of pests is emphasized so as to build up an armoury of such products.
