Abstract

Tubal factor infertility is the main cause of infertility in sub-Saharan Africa. However research on the etiology of infertility in sub- Saharan Africa is scarce generally clinic-based and findings might not be representative of the general population. This study aimed to determine causes of infertility in a community- and clinic-based sample from Moshi northern Tanzania. The community-based sample included 66 couples identified in a representative survey and the clinic-based sample included 112 couples seeking care for infertility at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre. An infertile case was defined by the absence of conception after 12 months of regular unprotected intercourse. The infertility examination incorporated a medical history and physical exam; for the women an endometrial biopsy for testing of hormonal function a hysterosalpingogram for assessment of tubal patency and in inconclusive cases a laparoscopy; and a sperm test for the men. Differences between the community- and clinic-based sample were tested using a Pearson X² test. (excerpt)
