Abstract

SummaryIn order to examine fertility after treatment of hydatidiform mole, the obstetric performance of 101 successfully treated patients was assessed in the first year following cessation of contraception. At the end of the year 83 patients had conceived, of whom nine had spontaneous abortions and two had recurrent molar pregnancies; the remaining 18 failed to conceive after a year of trial. Investigations of these infertile patients revealed anovulation in eight, endocrine disturbance and luteal phase defects in five, while in the remaining five no cause could be detected. Compared to the fertile patients, the infertile group had had a poorer reproductive performance before the molar pregnancy. There was an incidence of 18 per cent of residual infertility after overall management of gestational trophoblastic disease; the disease itself is unlikely to be the attributable cause.
