Abstract

Overall key points Infective conjunctivitis is a common infection of the mucous membrane on the surface of the eye. Adenoviruses and herpes simplex virus are the most common causes of viral infection. It is sometimes clinically difficult to differentiate between viral and bacterial infective conjunctivitis. There is a high rate of spontaneous resolution of bacterial conjunctivitis, within two-five days. A topical antibiotic is recommended if there is no improvement/worsening after two-three days.
