Abstract

Microbial keratitis is a common cause of ocular morbidity and loss of vision. The causes of infectious keratitis include viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites. The disease varies from mild superficial keratitis to deep corneal ulceration with descemetocele and corneal perforation. Microbial keratitis is vision threatening. Therefore, early diagnosis, microbiological identification, and prompt management are mandatory. Prognosis of infectious keratitis depends on the causative agent, predisposing factors, ocular surface integrity, and duration of the disease. Most cases of microbial keratitis are treated with topical antibiotics and addressing the ocular surface abnormalities. The therapy of bacterial, fungal, and parasitic infections requires compounding of topical antibiotics. Infectious keratitis requires urgent management.
