Abstract

In Chad, new cases of mosquito-transmitted malaria have risen by ten-times in 1 month. 14 021 cases were reported in the last week of August, compared with 1228 in the first week. In the Salamat region, 80% of visitors to consultants were infected with malaria, as opposed to the normal 30–40%. Malaria causes a quarter of all deaths in the country. Médecins Sans Frontières has launched an emercency intervention to respond to the situation. Their goal is to provide help with diagnostic tests and treatment, support local health workers, and improve epidemiological surveillance.
