Abstract
On Jan 6, the UK Health Security Agency reported a confirmed case of human avian influenza in the southwest of England. The case acquired their infection due to close and regular contact with infected birds kept within the home of the patient. Contact tracing has been completed, and no further transmission has been detected. Avian influenza is a type of influenza that spreads among birds, and outbreaks of the H5N1 strain have been reported in the UK. Although very rare, some strains can pass to humans through close contact with an infected bird. Human-to-human transmission is very rare. This is the first case of human H5N1 influenza in the UK, although cases have been reported globally.
