Abstract

<P>Pediatrics is a lot of fun. Interacting with the kids from “kootchee-koo” at 3 months to discussions of Hannah Montana versus the Jonas Brothers to the importance of Kierkegaard versus Sartre in the Existential movement (I had a couple of philosophy majors in my practice once upon a time), nothing beats it.</P> <h4>ABOUT THE GUEST EDITOR</h4> <P>S. Michael Marcy, MD, received his undergraduate degree from Pomona College and received his MD in 1961 from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He completed his pediatric postgraduate residencies at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Boston City Hospital. After serving in the army in Germany from 1964 to 1967, Dr. Marcy returned to Boston to complete a 3-year fellowship in pediatric infectious disease. In 1970 he joined the Kaiser-Permanente Health Care Program and has served for more than 35 years, first as a full- and then as a part-time primary-care pediatrician at their Panorama City, California, facility. He is currently also an Adjunct Researcher with the Kaiser-Permanente program working as a part-time investigator with the UCLA Center for Vaccine Research and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).</P> <P>Dr. Marcy is a Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Southern California and University of California at Los Angeles Schools of Medicine. He has served on numerous local, national, and international committees, including the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Committee on Infectious Diseases (Red Book Committee), the AAP Committee on Continuing Medical Education, and committees formed by the AAP, American Academy of Otolaryngology, and the National Committee on Quality Assurance to develop clinical guidelines for the treatment of pediatric upper respiratory infections. He was previous chairperson of the CDC's Brighton Collaboration, defining adverse events associated with immunization; the AAP General Pediatrics Board Review course (PREP The Course) and is currently chairperson of the AAP Pediatric Infectious Disease Board Review course (PREP-ID). He serves on the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practice (ACIP) and the California State Immunization Committee. He is on the editorial board of <cite>Pediatric Annals</cite> and has served on the editorial boards of <cite>The Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal</cite>, <cite>Infectious Diseases in Children</cite>, and the <cite>Pediatric Infections Forum</cite>, and is a peer reviewer for several major pediatric and infectious disease journals. A nationally-recognized speaker on pediatric infectious disease, he has been named to the list of Best Doctors and Best Pediatricians in America for many years.</P>
