Abstract

This work is divided into three major sections. Part 1 discusses abnormalities in host defenses, including congenital and acquired defects, and a chapter on the effects of malnutrition. Care of the long-term hospitalized patient is emphasized in this chapter. Although current, the section points out the great need for further research into the specific defects of the immune system of the host. Part 2, the heart of the book, concerns infections in specific abnormal hosts, including patients with endovascular and prosthetic implant infections and a unique chapter on intraocular infections. This chapter is deficient in information on intraocular bacterial infections—especially regarding the use of intraocular antibiotic therapy in this difficult clinical problem.
