Abstract
Individuals with infection-related spinal cord injury comprise a significant subset of nontraumatic SCI and SCI-related rehabilitation admissions. They tend to be older and have a greater incidence of paraplegic injuries (secondary to predominance of thoracolumbar locations) than their traumatic counterparts. Common causes and pathogens (vertebral osteomyelitis, epidural abscess, HIV-related infections, spinal tuberculosis, syphilis, and acute transverse myelitis) will be discussed along with clinical signs and presenting symptoms, laboratory and radiographic diagnostic testing, medical and surgical treatment, and rehabilitation.
