Abstract

Healthcare-associated outbreaks in outpatient settings continue to occur nationally despite public health infection prevention (IP) initiatives. Gaps in formal IP training, regulatory oversight, administrative support and infrastructure contribute to disease transmission during outpatient care. Federal and state patient safety efforts in outpatient settings have included increased legislation, patient activism and advocacy, and collaborative partnership formation. APIC Chapter involvement can support public health partners with educational program development and provision to their local healthcare provider community.
