Abstract
Hurricane Sandy necessitated the evacuation of long term care (LTC) facilities, assisted living and group homes. Many evacuees had medical, physical and behavioral health needs. A special needs shelter opened in Brooklyn, NY to serve 200 evacuees in an armory previously converted to a sports center. After two days, there were 600 evacuees. The shelter was run by the Office of Emergency Management. Medical, nursing and behavioral health staff was from the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation, Disaster Medical Assistance Teams, and a LTC facility.
