Abstract

Plankton samples from a freshwater reservoir in SE Spain were found to contain the green alga Oocystis lacustris infected with chytrid fungi. Detailed observations by optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed chytrid zoospores and several stages of zoosporangia on infected algae. Symptoms of enzymatic degradation of the algal cell wall by the fungus were revealed by SEM. The morphology and characteristics of the chytrid fungus resemble those of Diplochytridiun deltanum (Masters) Karling.
