Abstract

Three dozen brief essays by 34 scholarly investigators comprehensively cover the subject of cross infection in hospitals. Nine discussions serve to highlight the presentations and round out the subject. The symposium is an extraordinarily well-balanced review of the many interwoven facets of the complex known as institutionally acquired infections. The essays are compellingly readable and present the current state of knowledge in a surprisingly unified and constructive way. With their publication, students of the phenomenon of cross infection need not envy those who participated in the symposium. The continuing hazard of hospital-acquired infections and their worldwide distribution are described. Because most is known about staphylococcal infections, that subject forms the background theme of the symposium. Streptococcal, clostridial, gram-negative, and viral infections are oriented in the expanding scope of the problem.
