Abstract

Abstract
A study of 118 patients who were treated using intravenous polyethylene catheters is reported. 45% of the catheter tips were infected and 4 patients had bacteræmia from the same organism as that cultured from the catheter and skin. The incidence of infection was not related to the length of time the catheter had been in situ, the make of catheter used, or the fluid given. It is suggested that great care should be taken to ensure that the skinpuncture site is sterile and remains clean and that the catheter should be removed as soon as possible.
