Recent changes in governmental structure mean that the term `Britain' no longer clearly signifies what it used. However these changes have not yet had any appreciable impact on the practice of Infection Control, in which England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and the Irish Republic have several decades of common development. For convenience, these countries will therefore be considered together under the general heading of `Britain'.
