Abstract
The objective of this study was to examine characteristics of infant behavior immediately after delivery which might constitute a behavioral fit with patterns of maternal postpartum behavior which have been described elsewhere. Nine newborns were observed during the 1st hour after delivery and again during the 2nd day of life. Classes of behavior observed were states, arm and hand movements, and smiles. The infants were significantly more alert during the 1st hour than during the comparison period on the 2nd day. There were no differences in the other behaviors observed. Implications for mother-infant interaction and maternal bonding are discussed.
