Abstract

Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) bears a high burden of global under-five deaths. Using relevant information and up-to-date data is needed for monitoring progress in child health and survival in the region. This book chapter provides synthesized data from different sources to furnish key evidence on child health and survival in SSA. We synthesized information on data sources for monitoring infant and child mortality; reviewed existing child mortality frameworks, childhood mortality estimation techniques; and also analysed data on the levels, trends and patterns of infant and child mortality in SSA. The chapter also presents key drivers of infant and child mortality and overview of interventions implemented across SSA towards improving child health. It discusses recommendations for policies and programmes on child survival and presents future research agenda.
