Abstract

In this personal essay, Luis Alfaro relates his own circuitous journey to playwrighting. He reflects on how his experiences as a queer and Chicano artist—a journey filled with risks, failures, and experiments—inspired and informed his thirty-year career in poetry, performance art, and community-based theater. Drawing on anecdotes, ruminations, and meditations, Alfaro narrates the story of his convergence with the larger Latinx theater community, and his account considers how artists past and present are paving the way for the potential future of Latinx theater.
