Inelastic scattering of cold neutrons by various materials containing hydrogen

Abstract

A study has been made of the spectra of cold neutrons inelastically scattered by benzene, diphenyl, and unirradiated and irradiated polyethylene. A beryllium filter was used to separate the cold neutron spectral line,and the energy of the scattered neutrons was analyzed by the time of flight method. The measurements were made at the sample temperature 20° C. The resulting data are compared with the results of optical studies on the spectra of the materials used.
