Abstract

Differential cross sections for the inelastic scattering of 88.03 keV photons have been measured at an angle of 131°for 21 elements with 4⩽Z⩽83. The measurements wereperformed under vacuum using a 109Cd radioisotope asa photon source and a planar HPGe detector. The product ofintensity of the 88.03 keV incident photons, detector efficiencyand other geometrical factors were determined by measuring the Kx-ray yields from targets of different elements and fromknowledge of the respective fluorescence cross sections. Themeasured inelastic scattering cross sections have been comparedwith those calculated using the relativistic Klein-Nishinacross section and the non-relativistic Hartree-Fock incoherent scattering functions. The measured cross sections are found tobe in good agreement with the calculated values for all theelements under investigation except for Gd(BK = 50.239 keV), Dy (BK = 53.788 keV), Ho(BK = 55.618 keV), and Tm (BK = 59.390 keV), where thesevalues are lower by ~20%, but for Bi (BK = 90.526 keV), it is higher by 16%; BK is the K-shellbinding energy of the element.
