Abstract

Abstract Samples of H2O suspended in Ar were prepared which permitted us to record inelastic incoherent neutron scattering spectra of matrix-isolated water. In the energy loss spectrum, five peaks were found below 45 cm−1, including a strong ortho-para transition. Earlier assignments of free monomer rotations observed by far-IR spectroscopy could be confirmed. In the range 45 to 90 cm−1, only very weak intensity is found. The respective band positions do not agree with earlier far-IR data.
