Abstract

We have measured the generalized phonon-DOS of the La and Ce filled skutterudites LaFe 4Sb 12 and CeFe 4Sb 12 that are interesting materials for thermoelectric applications. We conclude that a single peak at ℏω≈7 meV corresponds to a localized mode of La-atoms in the LaFe 4Sb 12 compound. Our results agree with the phenomenological theory proposed earlier, based on the high value of atomic displacement parameter of this filling atom in diffraction data. Moreover, we find agreement with the recent INS results of Hermann et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 90 (2003) 135505), who observed a localized mode of the Tl-filling atoms in Tl x CoSb 4.
