Abstract
The cross section for the inelastic scattering of electrons from 12C was measured at excitation energies between 20 and 35 MeV and momentum transfers between 0.5 and 0.8 fm −1. The spectra show levels previously observed using photons, but the strengths of these levels are difficult to extract due to the presence of an underlying continuum. However, some idea of the variation of the strengths with momentum transfer could be obtained, and these are compared with the predictions of the collective model of the giant resonance. The underlying continuum is of interest in itself and its magnitude and momentum transfer dependence were investigated.
