Abstract

In this paper, inelastic pile–soil interaction is analyzed by using a hybrid type of numerical method. Piles are modeled as linear finite elements and the soil half-space is modeled using boundary elements. Inelastic modeling of the soil media is introduced by a rational approximation to a continuum with nonlinear interface springs along the piles. For this purpose, a modified Ozdemir’s nonlinear model is implemented and systems of equations are coupled for piles and pile groups at interacting nodes. To verify the proposed algorithm, three experimental results from previously conducted tests on piles under static axial and lateral loads are compared with those obtained from the present analysis.
