Abstract

Randomly selected grain elevator managers were questioned, via a mail survey, regarding their opinions about testing of corn for storability (i.e., potential for spoilage during subsequent storage or shipment). In general, the respondents favored such a test. Without regard to cost, 9% gave a favorable response (i.e., said it was likely or very likely that they would use such a test) if the test required three days per sample. The favorable response rate was 41% if the test were to require 1 h per sample, and the favorable response rate was 61% if the test were to require 15 min per sample. No correlation was evident between willingness-to-use (WTU) or willingness-to-pay (WTP) and the size of the respondents company. A slight positive correlation existed between WTP and the percentage of corn stored longer than 10 months in the respondents facility.
