Abstract
Processing stone factories in South Africa and abroad are labor intensive, production costs are high and final quality is not up to demanding world standards. Known stone processing plants with a similar set-up to some of the modem overseas plants usually employ 20–25 workers. Production time of gang saws, polishing line, flaming line in South Africa plants is longer (109 hours i.e. 4–5 days for a one block cut) and simultaneously product cost is increased by 10–25%. In order to reduce the production cost and increase the quality of the final products, Stone processing industry has to introduce high level automation, process control and flexible cells as subdepartments in the stone processing plants. To solve above mentioned problems that relate to labor, quality and smooth production, this paper presents a conceptual approach of a possible future “turnkey” natural stone processing factory.
