Abstract

The NHS is facing a significant financial challenge. If the financial crisis is to drive morethan a ‘slash and burn’ of current services, the NHS needs to go on an improvementjourney. This article shares the experience of an industry tour which highlighted the ingredients of successful healthcare improvement, and provided a vision of where health care could be going in the future. The experience confirmed some core foundations for successful change in health care, including the successful application of an evidence-based change methodology alongside a clear vision. It also suggested the need for sustained leadership and organisational effort over time periods of up to 10 years. This presents a significant challenge to the NHS where improvement is required over a much shorter time frame.
