Abstract

Sewage sludge waste-residue can be transformed to more valuable products. Direct catalytic liquefaction tests were performed to produce synthetic crude from the organic part of the feedstock. A commercial catalyst was used (metal sulfided NiWSx/SiO2-Al2O3 material). The reaction was carried out in an autoclave at 420°C for 1 h with a weight ratio of 2:5:2 (sewage sludge:tetralin:catalyst) in hydrogen. Feedstock and products were analysed (GC/FID-TCD, elemental H, C, N, S% and ICP metals analyses, TGA (O2 and N2) and ATR-FTIR). The solid feedstock and residues were analysed by XRD and XRF. A positive sludge conversion to heptane soluble products was found. The main gases products were ethane, methane, CO2 and CO (cracking and deoxygenation products).
