Abstract

Many men and women diagnosed as schizophrenic become chronically handicapped. About half the patients in British mental hospitals are schizophrenics who have been there longer than two years, even though the policy of early discharge is now reducing the long-stay population. However, about half of all schizophrenic patients are still handicapped five years after their first admission.1
