Abstract

Construction vehicles (CVs) are typically a class of remote mobile objects. Safe, efficient, and low-cost operations of CVs have raised an urgent need for the intelligent remote monitoring system (IRMS) based on the Internet of Things (IoT). The existing technology of remote wireless communication could not meet the requirements of the IoT-based IRMS for CVs on the real time, efficiency, and reliability of data transmission, transmission data types, and the balance between the monitoring scale and costs. This paper proposes a remote wireless transparent transmission protocol, CVDTP. First, all remote monitoring data are abstracted and classified. Then, transmission modes are matched online and optimized dynamically with transmission data types and transmission channel states. The field test and the practical application on the Internet of concrete pump trucks demonstrate that CVDTP could afford an industrial-QoS data transmission on the remote wireless network characterized by low bandwidth and frequent disconnection. The test results also show that CVDTP does not need the support of routing nodes in remote wireless networks; thus, it is easy to be implemented.
