Abstract

1. Granulated ferrosilicon powders of grades Si15g-0, Si15g-00, Si15g-1, and Si15g-2 are now being manufactured industrially by the process of atomization of a molten low-silicon alloy with a high-pressure gas stream. The powders meet the requirements of the current State Committee for Metallurgy Technical Specification No. 1099-64. 2. Following a conversion of the existing pilot-plant installations, the quality of powder has improved substantially and its cost has fallen by one-third. 3. It has been demonstrated that, from both a technical and an economic viewpoint, it is desirable that 45 and 75% ferrosilicon powders should be produced by the process described. 4. A study was made of the optimum process parameters for the atomization of high- and low-silicon alloys under industrial conditions.
