Abstract

CERN has constructed a Large Electron Positron Storage Ring (LEP) for colliding beam experiments. Particles storage requires an evacuated (uhv) beam pipe at p < 3 × 10 −7 Pa. The quadrupole vacuum chambers (VCQ) are made of aluminium without their own pumping system, hence they must have a very low outgassing rate. For the manufacture of 2635 m of VCQ, the Plasma arc welding process was chosen. After vacuum commissioning at 150°C, all VCQ had a vacuum limit corresponding to a specific outgassing rate lower than 2 × 10 −13 Pa m 3 s −1 cm −2.
