Abstract
The typical strategy and methodology employed in ensuring minimal environmental impact from the disposal of industrial effluents is presented. Three case studies are reviewed to illustrate some of the problems faced. The first shows the approach of a regulatory agency to an industrialist in a developing situation. The second indicates how one industrialist resolved a production process effluent problem through on-site treatment plus recycle. The third relates another industrialist's dilemma faced with the constraint of strict limitation on trade wastes discharged to sewer. The studies confirm the need to consider every industrial effluent discharge independently in order to minimize their local environmental impact.
