Abstract

A case study carried out at twelve industrial facilities shed light on the way managers perceive, develop, and integrate capabilities for industrial ecology-related activities of waste valorization. Focused on raw material substitution through industrial symbiosis, these activities helped to significantly improve performance, to turn recycled materials into value-adding products and boost corporate sustainability. Interviews with sixty managers of the facilities visited revealed that improving performance with waste valorization initiatives depended on the coordination of capabilities related to several functional areas including technological innovation, waste material flow variability, environmental constraints management, green marketing networks and human resource adjustments. The organizational capabilities identified in this study strengthen the literature on the connection between industrial ecology and firm performance.
